Martial arts creates a unique opportunity to do something great for your body and mind, all at the same time. A martial arts practice improves physical health and fitness, but it benefits your mind as well.

However, despite the possibility of making positive changes in multiple areas of your life, many people come up with all sorts of excuses not to learn martial arts.

If you’re interested in improving your fitness, health, and lifestyle, martial arts could be the solution you’ve been searching for. But to make those changes, there are a few common excuses you’ll need to overcome to get started.

Here are a few reasons people choose not to learn martial arts:

1. I HAVE NO TIME.

Lack of time is probably one of the biggest obstacles to starting and then committing to a martial arts practice. When your life feels hectic, the last thing you want is to pile on yet another activity. So the trick is figuring out how to make time. First, take a look at your current schedule. What does a typical day look like? Is there the possibility of adding a morning class if you wake up earlier? Or maybe skip that evening TV show in favor of a class. If it’s important enough for you to make a change, you’ll find a way to make it work in your schedule.

2. I’M OUT OF SHAPE.

A lot of people see MMA on TV and assume that everyone who trains is in great shape. The truth is that martial arts is for everyone. No matter what your current fitness level is, you’re at the perfect stage to get started. You do not have to be in shape before you even think of setting foot on the mats. The hardest part is showing up for class. But once you do, you’ll notice how much you probably have in common with your fellow students. Some might’ve started where you are today; others might be at a very similar fitness level. The important thing to remember is that martial arts is all about individual improvement. The only fitness levels that should matter to you is your own.

3. I’LL GET HURT.

The safest place you could ever learn self-defense skills and techniques is at a studio offering classes led by knowledgeable and experienced instructors. Your instructor is there to make sure that you learn safely and properly while also demonstrating respect and self-discipline. Most studios require beginners to learn a basic set of skills before sparring with another student. And while it’s impossible to promise that you’ll never get hurt by practicing martial arts, a well-structured class with instructors who have your safety in mind is where you want to learn.
