Today, BJJ is practiced in 2 forms: Gi (with a uniform similar to a Judo or Karate uniform) and No Gi (with shorts and a t-shirt, rash guard). When practicing with the Gi, there’s a lot of use of the uniform and there’s many similarities to Judo. When practiced without Gi, there are more similarities to wrestling. Both forms of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are often referred to as grappling. In both styles, the athlete will perform various drills to develop their positioning, submission skills, defense and takedowns. There is a heavy emphasis on close quarter partner work, drilling and rolling (BJJ’s sparring). BJJ is often referred to as the gentle art, as there are no strikes thrown.

 

With our talented instructors who compete themselves, you can even take BJJ to the next level and start competing with the Systems BJJ team!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be very useful as a self-defense, because BJJ focuses on grappling, and joint locks/chokes, rather than strikes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ as most people refer to it as, has become very popular in the last few decades, due in part to the grappling aspects of the sport, which can be safely trained with little risk of serious injury. BJJ is also a big part of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), where virtually all MMA fighters train some variation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides a well rounded skill set for any street self-defense situation, as well as being a fun and challenging sport.
