There are many ways to get into shape or learn a new skill but there’s only one way to get exactly what you need at any given time. If you’re looking to get a custom plan, suited specifically for your needs, goals, schedule, and current level, personal training may be the right choice for you. But with so many personal trainers out there, how do you know who to choose? And more importantly, how do you know if personal training is right for you? In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about personal training, including what it is, who it's for and how to find the best trainer near you. Let's get started!

What is personal training?

Personal training is traditionally a type of fitness program that is designed specifically for you. Your personal trainer will work with you to create a program that meets your individual needs and goals. They will help you to stay on track and motivated, and will provide guidance and support throughout your journey to fitness. But personal training is no longer just for people looking to lose weight or tone up. You can get expert-level training from some of the world’s best boxers, kickboxers, MMA fighters, BJJ practitioners, and self-defense experts.

The amazing thing about one-on-one coaching is the flexibility and customization of the program. You can find a private trainer for just about any goal you have.

Types of Personal Trainers Based on Interest

  • Kickboxing Trainers
  • Boxing Trainers
  • BJJ Coaches
  • Krav Maga Experts
  • Weightlifting
  • Powerlifting
  • Weight loss trainers
  • Competition prep coaches (nutritionists, posing coaches, body building trainers, BJJ competitions preparation, belt test prep, etc.)

Who is Personal Training for?

People work with personal trainers for many reasons, and it's not uncommon to be intimidated by the idea of working out with a professional. You might feel like you don't have enough time or money on your hands- but if this doesn’t motivate you then what does?

Investing in a personal trainer may be a good option for you if you:

  • Aren't seeing results with your current regime
  • Not sure where to start
  • You want to learn a new or specialized skill
  • You're preparing for a test, competition, or sports event
  • You want to learn how to exercise on your own
  • Group classes are too intimidating or overwhelming
  • You have a specific goal you want to achieve
  • You have a specific condition, illness, or injury you're recovering from
  • You want the accountability from a coach
  • You want support or supervision during a workout

What to look for in a private trainer?

When looking for a personal trainer, it’s important to find someone who is qualified and experienced. Weight loss trainers should have a certification from a reputable organization. It’s important to note that due to the lack of governing organizations in the martial arts world, there may not be one specific certification your boxing private trainer has. Generally, in martial arts you want to ask how long the practitioner has been training and what belt they hold. You want to know who they've trained under and if they've competed. You also want to know how long they've been teaching martial arts. Just because someone can do something, doesn't mean they can transfer that knowledge well.

A word of advice though, things like belts and titles are only one piece of the puzzle. Titles don't make exceptional coaches. You're really just asking those questions as part of the overall qualification process because unfortunately there are some people who will start to train people without having enough experience themselves. When looking for a martial arts personal trainer you typically want to look for instructors at gyms. You will have the backing from the gym that this person is reputable.

Systems Training Center has qualified, vetted, and experienced martial arts personal trainers and they all have a passion of giving the gift of martial arts to people just like you.
