When it comes to Gi compared to No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, what’s right for you? First, let’s take a look at the differences between Gi and No-Gi. Then, you’ll have a better understanding of which Jiu-Jitsu style is right for you.

GI JIU-JITSU

Traditional Jiu-Jitsu is done while wearing a Gi:

  • Kimono

  • Pants

  • Belt (representing your current rank)

In Gi Jiu-Jitsu, opponents are allowed to grab each other’s clothing and use it against them. This constant grabbing and pulling of the Gi’s fabric strengthens your upper body. Also, Gi Jiu-Jitsu tends to be a slower and more problem-solving style compared to No-Gi.

NO-GI JIU-JITSU

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is typically done while wearing athletic clothing, like a rash guard and shorts. Unlike Gi Jiu-Jitsu, opponents are not allowed to grab their opponent’s clothing. No-Gi is faster-paced and requires you to make quick decisions. The fast pace leads to significant improvements in your conditioning and explosiveness.

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU?

Some practitioners believe that Gi is better because you can take your skills and transfer them to No-Gi. Others believe No-Gi is better because it’s a more realistic style and also easy to make the transition to MMA.

With both No-GI and Gi Jiu-Jitsu, you’ll get a new dimension to your training and martial arts practice. The one that is right for you really does come down to personal preference. Think about where you’re headed with your martial arts goals and train the style that will best support what you’re working toward.

Training in both styles will make you a better grappler. Not to mention, by mixing up your training between the two styles, you’re adding variety to your training. Variety can help you push past training plateaus, help you avoid burnout, and keep you excited about your training.

At Systems Training Center, we offer both Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. To learn more about Jiu-Jitsu and all of our other program offerings and contact us today.
