September Fitness Challenge

Systems Training Center has teamed up with MyZone to create a really cool fitness challenge for the members in the month of September.

One of the issues all fitness trainers and martial arts coaches always have is, they don’t actually know how hard a members or client works. The coaches are limited by “looks.” Does it look like the person training is putting in max effort? That leaves a lot of room for error.

We also know that numbers never lie; either you worked hard or you did not! The beauty of MyZone is that it allows us to actually see if you’re working hard or not, in real time on the big screen!

This will help keep members accountable and allows coaches to stay on top of their students. It will also teach the members about how their body feels and functions at various heart rate zones! It will give you an idea of what “70% of max heart rate” actually feels like, since if you have never worked out in your life or if it has been a long time, chances are you don’t understand what your coach is asking for when he or she says “get into lactic acid threshold!”

On 9/1/21, Systems Training Center is hosting a 4-week long challenge called the ZOMBIE FITNESS CHALLENGE! Members get a 10 day head start and can accumulate as many MEPs (more on that below) as possible before our coaches start playing. The coaches are the zombies trying to catch up to you. For every coach and staff member you beat in MEPs at the end of the 4 weeks, you’ll be given a raffle ticket to win some awesome prizes! We’re raffling 5 prizes from a Lululemon gift card to privates with your favorite instructor (all prizes listed at the end).

How does MyZone work?

MyZone is a heart rate monitor that you strap around your chest or wear as a watch. It measures how fast your heart rate beats and the higher of a heart rate zone that you can get into, the more MEPs you get. MEPs stand for MyZone Effort Points. The MyZone also stores all workouts you do outside of the gym and calculates your accumulated points. You can see your teammates' scores in the app as well, which makes for great challenges and competitions!

MyZone measures your heart rate to the same level of accuracy as an ECG heart rate monitor, as used by health professionals. Discover motivational data you trust.

What are heart rate zones?

MyZone has five different “zones” that your heart rate is in: Gray (50-59% of max heart rate), blue (60-69%), green (70-79%), yellow (80-89%), and lastly red (90% and above).

Heart rate zones are important to understand in order to be able to get the most out of your workout and to prevent injuries. Here are the different heart rate zones and an explanation of them:

Zone 1: Gray. Active Rest. 50-59% of maximum heart rate (VO2 max). Very easy effort level.

Zone 2: Blue. Active Recovery. 60-69% of VO2 max. Easy effort level.

Zone 3: Green. Endurance (aka aerobic). 70-79% of VO2 max. Moderate effort level.

Zone 4: Yellow. Lactic Acid Threshold (aka anaerobic). 80-89% of VO2 max. Hard effort level.

Zone 5: Red. Maximum Performance. 90-100% of VO2 max. Maximum effort.

Why are heart rate zones important?

The heart rate zones are important to understand in order to be able to gage expectations, both from your coaches and/or yourself. You can’t expect certain outcomes if you don’t put in the necessary effort and you also need to know when and how to get to recovery, in order to prevent injuries. Intensity and recovery, two of the most important aspects of training to get results, over a long period of time. Plus, there’s few things that will help you stay more motivated than seeing your heart rate percentage up on the big screen in front of the whole class!

Five benefits of working with a heart rate monitor:

  1. You will know how much effort you are putting into each workout. Remember, the higher your heart rate, the more calories you’re burning!

  2. Intensity matters and numbers don’t lie! No matter how you feel, you will have the actual numbers live in front of you.

  3. It’s easier to follow along and “peak” your workout. For example, if the trainer wants you to be working at 60% of max effort, you will actually know what 60% of max HR is.

  4. Both you and your instructor or personal trainer can track your efforts both during and after the workout, as well as over a long period of time!

  5. Goal setting is always helpful for motivation and to track your results. By having actual goals in each training session, it will help you get the results you are striving for!’
