4 WAYS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING

Time is precious, and making time for your martial arts training can sometimes seem like a challenge by itself.

If you’re making your martial arts training a priority, it also makes sense that you’d want to make the most out of that time. So here are four ways to maximize your martial arts training:

1. SET SMART MARTIAL ARTS GOALS.

One way to maximize your martial arts training is to define what you want to accomplish. Rather than trying to tackle everything simultaneously, focusing on one or two personal goals gives you direction. Sometimes it will make sense to build on your strengths. Other times, you may want to work on tackling one of your weaknesses. By setting personal goals, you’ll know exactly what you should focus on in every class or training session.

2. BE CONSISTENT.

It’s tough to improve your skills in any activity when you’re inconsistent with your practice. By creating a training habit, not only are you increasing the frequency of your training sessions, but you’re also able to build off of your most recent gains. Keep in mind that a consistent training program is not the same thing as training every single day. To create consistency with your training, make time for recovery. This time to rest and rebuild your body helps keep you moving forward and avoid injury or overtraining.

3. ASK QUESTIONS.

Another way to get the most out of your training is to treat your instructor as a resource. If you’re struggling or feeling stuck on something, don’t be afraid to ask questions or get some help. They won’t know that you’re having a hard time with something unless you say something, so don’t be shy. Remember that your time is valuable, and getting some guidance from an experienced instructor will be worth it.

4. SPAR WITH EVERYONE.

You’ll find that you experience the most improvement when you spar with students who have a variety of experience levels. So roll and spar with everyone. Choose partners who know more than you and learn something. It’s an excellent opportunity to push yourself to get better. Also, spar with partners who are less experienced than you and teach them something. When you have to explain something to someone else, it helps you learn it even better.
