Not only does martial arts improve a child’s physical fitness, but it can also develop focus and concentration early in life. Kids learn mental skills, like focus and concentration, during class. They can then apply these skills at home and school and become more focused in their daily lives.

Here are a few ways that participating in kids martial arts improves focus:

1. EMPHASIS ON SELF-CONTROL

To learn martial arts skills, kids must stay focused and concentrate on their instructor’s directions. Even when something in the room becomes distracting, kids must learn to bring their attention back to the coach. Redirecting their attention back to the task at hand develops self-control.

2. OUTLET FOR ENERGY

Let’s face it – it’s tough to concentrate when you have a lot of excess energy. As adults, we know what this feels like. We’ve found activities that help us find a productive outlet for that extra energy. Martial arts can do the same thing for your child. The martial arts class environment creates a place where kids have a safe outlet for any extra energy that might have accumulated that day. Over time, kids recognize when they have too much energy and are unable to concentrate. These are the moments to encourage them to take some time to move around. And then, they can sit down to do something that requires more focused concentration.

3. REPETITION AND PRACTICE

When kids first begin martial arts, they learn basic skills that form the foundation of more advanced skills. Kids learn these foundational skills through practice and repetition. At first, it can be hard to repeat the same skill over and over – maybe even a little boring. Building the discipline to stay focused and continue practicing even when bored is a valuable life skill.

Martial arts allows kids to develop their focus and concentration in a fun environment. If you’re interested in getting your child involved in martial arts, contact us at Systems Training Center today.
