WHY IS HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT) SO POPULAR?

A HIIT workout includes repeated intervals that are high intensity but short duration. The high-intensity intervals alternate with lower intensity intervals of active recovery. For example, in a HIIT workout, you might do a quick burst of exercise, like sprinting or burpees, and then rest before starting the next interval.

Since 2014, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has ranked in the top five fitness trends (not fads) in a worldwide survey organized by the American College of Sports Medicine. HIIT has stuck around at the top of the charts for so long because people like it.

But why? What is this method of working out all about? Here are a few characteristics of HIIT training that make it so popular:

EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT

HIIT workouts are effective and efficient ways of training. You’ll know you’re on the right track when you notice your heart rate increasing, and you’re out of breath.

NO MACHINES NECESSARY

HIIT workouts don’t require machines or lots of equipment. Most HITT workouts are done with minimal equipment, and many movements are bodyweight exercises.

LOCATION

You can do a HIIT workout pretty much anywhere. Indoors or outside, in a group or by yourself.

TIME

HIIT workouts are intentionally designed to pack a punch in a short period of time. And you’ll have plenty of time to get in a quality warm-up and save a few minutes afterward for a proper cool down.

MODIFY AND SCALE

HIIT workouts can be intense, but at the same time, the workout can be modified to suit your fitness level. Pay attention to your body and how you feel. Start smart and scale back or modify the workout when needed.
