WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR FIRST MARTIAL ARTS CLASS

Every martial arts student was once a beginner. For those who are brand new to martial arts, your journey might begin with a free trial or weekly class pass. Trying a few classes before committing is a great idea. You’ll get a better understanding if martial arts is an activity you want to pursue.

But starting something new, particularly as an adult, can be a challenge. If it’s been a while since you were a beginner at something, try to keep an open mind. You will have a lot to learn, but that’s one of the great things about starting martial arts.

As you’re getting started, here are a few things to expect during your first martial arts class:

1. EXPECT PHYSICAL CONTACT.

Certain styles of martial arts, like Jiu-Jitsu, involve a lot of close physical contact. Grappling is a part of the learning process, and you’ll practice applying the techniques you learn by teaming up with a partner. Don’t be surprised when you get up close and personal with one of your fellow students.

2. EXPECT A WORKOUT.

No matter your current fitness level, you’ll find that a martial arts class is a full-body workout. You may re-discover some muscles that haven’t been sore for a long time. Don’t let muscle soreness discourage you. You’re going to move in ways that you may have never moved before, so your body will need some time to adapt.

3. EXPECT TO MEET SOME NEW PEOPLE.

Martial arts is very much about learning, training, and self-defense. But it has a strong community element, as well. A lot of martial arts students form lasting friendships with the people they meet through training. Show up ready to meet new people (that you’ll probably find you share a lot in common), and you’ll have a great time.
